This scholarship was established in 1988 in memory of Tammy Joe Milliken. Her parents, Ruth and Ervin Milliken, APSU alumna, established an endowment to create this scholarship, which is to be awarded each calendar year to a graduate of Northwest High School in Montgomery County. The recipient of this scholarship must be in the upper 25 percent of the high school graduating class, have a minimum ACT Composite score of 20 and an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), be an entering freshman at Austin Peay, and should be planning to major in Communication and Theatre. This scholarship can be renewed for subsequent academic years, provided a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is maintained each year. The monetary value of the scholarship will vary after the freshman year. The student must complete a minimum of 12 hours each semester. Selection is made by the Chair of the Communication and Theatre Department based on recommendations by department faculty members and the Northwest High school principal and faculty. This scholarship award is $1,500 for the first year and can apply to tuition, fees, books, housing, meals or any other college-related expenses. Application forms are available in the guidance office at Northwest High School or the Communication and Theatre Department at APSU. Eligibility: Graduate of Northwest HS in Montgomery County, upper 25% of class, min ACT 20, min 3.0 GPA, entering freshman majoring in Comm and Theatre.3

She is survived by her husband, Charle Louis "Choppy" Rees of Westbrook; a daughter, Glenda "Sis" Currie of Henderson; two sons, "Dink" Rees and "Jug" Rees, both of Colorado City; two sisters, Vaurine Smith of Big Spring and Vera Lee Hunter of Marble Falls; two brothers, Russell Milliken of Burnett and Bill Milliken of Coahoma; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.2

Vaurine married Ozro Allison on November 18, 1939 in Colorado City and he preceded her in death on October 14, 1971. She then married Alvin Smith on October 23, 1976 and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1989.
Vaurine was a member of the Retired Senior Citizens, Chamber Tourist Center, and was an active volunteer in the Kentwood Community Center, where she was a member of the gospel singing group. She had been a legislative reporter for the AARP for a number of years.
Vaurine had worked at Craigs Grocery Store in Forsan and then in the cafeterias in the Coahoma schools. She was a member of Coahoma United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons Preston Duane Allison of Austin and Rodney Allison of El Paso; one sister, Vera Lee Hunter of Marble Falls; two brothers, Russell Milliken of Florence and Bill Milliken of Coahoma; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

     Vera Lee Milliken was born on 23 September 1926 at Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas. She was the daughter of Russell Franklin Milliken Sr. and Laura Edna Richardson. She married Kenneth Dee Hunter, son of James Alton Hunter Sr. and Reta Mae Shuler, on 12 January 1946. She and Kenneth Dee Hunter lived in 1980 at New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana.1 She died on 27 December 2012 at Burnet County, Texas, at age 86.2

Obituary

Vera Lee Hunter, 86, of Marble Falls, Texas, passed away at home on December
27, 2012. She was born September 23, 1926 in Lamesa, Texas (Higanbotham
Community) to Russell Franklin Milliken, Sr and Laura Edna (Richardson)
Milliken.

Vera married Kenneth Dee Hunter on January 12, 1946 in Dallas, Texas, then
followed him to several positions over the country during his 42 year career
with General Electric Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers. She
is survived by her husband Kenneth, son Keith Dee Hunter of Indianapolis,
Indiana, daughter Karen Lee Kuhns of Lexington, South Carolina and several
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas at
2:00 PM Thursday, January 3, 2013.
