Mary Whelan Prue1

F, b. 6 December 1908, d. 8 March 2009
Mary Whelan Prue was born on 6 December 1908 at Texas.1 She married Richard Currier before 1935.2 She and Richard Currier were divorced in 1936.2 She married Edward Mortimer Morris Warburg, son of Felix Moritz Warburg and Frieda Schiff, in 1939.1 She died on 8 March 2009 at Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, at age 100.1 Mary Warburg, a Noted Philanthropist, Dies at 100

Mary Warburg, a noted philanthropist, died Sunday in Norwalk, Conn. She was 100 and lived in Wilton, Conn.

Her daughter, Daphne Astor, confirmed the death. Mrs. Warburg previously resided in Manhattan and Westport, Conn.

The widow of Edward M. M. Warburg, a member of the Warburg banking family and a prominent patron of the arts, Mrs. Warburg was involved over the years as a supporter or board member of many charitable organizations, among them the Henry Street Settlement; the United Negro College Fund; the Institute of International Education; the Association for Homemaker Service, a social welfare agency; and the Hole in the Wall Camps, the network of camps for seriously ill children founded by Paul Newman. She was also long active in Democratic Party circles.

Mary Whelan Prue was born in Texas on Dec. 6, 1908; she was reared on her father’s sheep ranch south of Hope, N.M., in the last days of the New Mexico Territory and the early days of statehood. At 7, she fired a shotgun at the revolutionary general Pancho Villa as he tore through the ranch on a raid, her daughter said. She did not hit him.

When Mary was 13 or 14, she left school and with her older sister, Edwina, settled in New York, where they worked as fashion models. Mary was later an assistant fashion editor at Vogue magazine. An early marriage, to Richard Currier, ended in divorce in 1936.

In 1939, she married Mr. Warburg, a founder of the Jewish Museum; the Museum of Modern Art; and the American Ballet, the precursor of the New York City Ballet. During World War II, Mrs. Warburg worked with the United States Office of Inter-American Affairs, which conducted agricultural, health and cultural exchanges.

Mr. Warburg died in 1992. Mrs. Warburg’s sister, Edwina d’Erlanger, the widow of Baron Leo d’Erlanger, died in 1994.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Astor, of Hatley St. George, England, Mrs. Warburg is survived by a son, David Warburg, of Sebastopol, Calif; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A son from Mrs. Warburg’s first marriage, Stephen Currier, disappeared with his wife in 1967 aboard a private plane flying over the Caribbean Sea.2
